Afghan mine blast kills 20 on bus

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 1 (UPI) -- A roadside mine exploded after being stuck by a passenger bus in Nimroz province in southwest Afghanistan, killing 20 people, police said.

Another 30 were reported injured.

The incident occurred in the Khash Rod district in the northern part of the province, southwest of Kabul, the Xinhua news agency reported.

"The ill-fated passenger bus hit a mine in Khash Rod District in the afternoon, leaving 20 dead and the driver injured," Mohammed Musa Rasuli, provincial deputy police chief, told Xinhua.

The BBC, quoting another police official, reported the explosion occurred on the highway between Kandahar and Nimroz. The official said another 30 people were injured.

No one had claimed responsibility for the attack but authorities suspected the Taliban.

Taliban insurgents frequently use improvised explosive devices in their attacks.
