The City of Zagreb on Sunday celebrated its day at a special session of City Council at which Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic said in her address that the country's capital was the "first face" of Croatia for foreigners and guests coming from abroad and she described Zagreb as the top place for Croatian integration.
The president underscored the economic importance of the Croatian capital that generates a third of the country's GDP and makes up more than a third of Croatia's exports.
"The GDP development index for Zagreb is three times as high as for Vukovar-Srijem County," Grabar-Kitarovic said, which she saw as an indication of uneven economic development throughout Croatia and therefore, the president called for elaborating programmes, based on solidarity, under which Zagreb will serve as support to the development of other Croatian regions.
It is essential to prepare, in the spirit of the patriotic unity, programmes in which Zagreb will assume a greater role in supporting the progress of less-developed parts of Croatia, she said.
The president is confident that Zagreb would continue implementing programmes aimed at its development, notably in tourism.
"The responsibility lies with all of us," she added.
In his address, Mayor Milan Bandic thanked the generations of residents throughout centuries for their contribution to developing Zagreb into a citizen-friendly community characterised by culture, tolerance, warmth and cosiness.
The session also included a ceremony of the conferment of honorary citizenship on retired General Mladen Markac.
