Academician Vlatko Pavletic Dies


Former Croatian parliament speaker Vlatko Pavletic died in Zagreb this morning.

University professor, literature theoretician, essayist and critic, politician, academician Vlatko Pavletic died on Wednesday morning in Zagreb.

From 1995 to 1999 Pavletic was the Croatian parliament speaker. After the death of the first Croatian President Franjo Tudjman he was interim President of Croatia and from 2000 deputy speaker of parliament. He retired in 2004.

Pavletic was born in Zagreb on December 2, 1930. He graduated at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, majoring in Croatian language and literature in 1955. He earned his doctorate in 1975.

From 1990 he was the minister of education, culture, technical culture and sports. From 1992 he was member of parliament, chairman of the parliamentary committee for education, science and culture and vice-president of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
